World Arthritis Day 12 October 2013
World Arthritis day was established in 1996 by the World Arthritis Organisation. It is celebrated on 12th of October each year, but there are ongoing campaigns during the whole year. This year’s theme is “Healthy Aging” with the motto “Living Better, Ageing Well”, and the events realised to all cities have been placed under the auspices of Minister of Health Dr. Petros Petrides.
The aim is to inform and raise awareness among relevant bodies and the public on the rheumatic diseases to achieve early diagnosis and direct granting of the appropriate treatment to ensure effective treatment of the disease with better prognosis and quality of life of the patient and thus with important benefits for the general public.
The Cyprus League against Rheumatism has organised an informative campaign in the provinces of Nicosia, Larnaca, Limassol and Ammohostos for the achievement of the goal mentioned above. There were kiosks staffed by
volunteers and friends of the League while also Professionals of Health, Rheumatologists, Physiotherapists, Dieticians, Podiatrists etc.

Rheumatic diseases represent the first factor of morbidity Worldwide with over 25% of the population that is in Cyprus more than 100 thousand of our compatriots have some form of rheumatic disease as well as the first factor of physical disability and the second leading cause of job loss. The inflammatory rheumatism, osteoporosis, osteoarthritis and rheumatic disease of the connective tissue are four major categories of rheumatic diseases.
The Cyprus League Against Rheumatism is an active member of the European League against Rheumatism (Eular) www.eular.org which is the European organisation umbrella which represents scientific companies, association of health professionals and the organisations of individuals with rheumatoid diseases in Europe. The aims of Eular are to reduce the burden of rheumatic diseases on individuals and society but also to improve the treatment, prevention and rehabilitation of musculo-skeletal disorders. The Eular promotes education and research in the field of rheumatology as well as to identify the needs of people with rheumatic diseases and increase awareness
of rheumatic diseases.
